Couch to 5k in Six Weeks

  • The Travis entry posted on August 19th, 2006.

My girlfriend and I have started a simple beginner’s running program. She’s in shape. I’m not. We both suck at running. Excellent combination.

Hopefully we can get it going and work up to a speedy and healthy schedule. We actually started a couple weeks ago but due to travel conflicts and such, haven’t had a chance to keep it up. I know, excuses. It is on come Monday though, mark my words. We’re committed, damnit.

We’re already breaking the first rule, which is to actually sign up for a 5k run/walk. I think we’re just too lazy to find out. I believe she mentioned something about a potential event coming up that might make a good goal. Having a deadline is always good, I agree.

Here’s the training schedule we’re working with, care of Wade:

Week One:

  • Monday: 5 min run with 5 min cool down
  • Wednesday: 5 min run with 5 min cool down
  • Friday: 10 min run, cool down

Week Two:

  • M: 7 min run, cool down
  • W: 7 min run, cool down
  • F: 15 min run, cool down

Week Three

  • M: 12 min run, cool down
  • W: 15 min run, cool down
  • F: 20 min run, cool down

Week Four

  • M: 15 min run, cool down
  • W: 18 min run, cool down
  • F: 25 min run, cool down

Week Five

  • M: 20 min run, cool down
  • W: 25 minute run, cool down
  • F: 30 min. run, cool down

Week Six

  • M: 15 min run, cool down
  • W:20 min run, cool down
  • F: 10 min run, cool down
  • Sat/Sun. Go race!

Best of luck to the both of you! I’m starting to get back into shape through running. I used to be an XC running years ago when I was in high school. My mom and I were going to train this summer together to run a 5k. But, instead, we picked up a hobby of cooking…that didn’t help our training at all. Again, best of luck to both of you!

I’m glad you guys are trying it out. It’s great to have a partner to help motivate you. I’d still be a tubby smoker if it wasn’t for my wife. She’s amazing.
