No, transhumanism isn’t the latest niche market for internet pr0n. It is, however, almost as interesting.
Transhumanism refers to a philosophy in which humankind as we know it does not represent the end of our development as a species. We’re just starting out on our journey. It opens all kinds of interesting avenues for thinking.
Basically, we use science and technology to vastly surpass the current conceptions of human limitations. Will and I often make the joke “oh, science & technology will save me, no worries” when participating in some kind of unhealthy practice — eating crap food, for example. How much of a joke is it though?
Some say that we’re already rapidly approaching a post-Darwinian era. Modern medicine does everything it can to combat seemingly natural selection. The weakest of our species are in substantially less danger today than they were when they were fighting for their lives out in the wilderness.
Neurotechnology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, *technology… Are we on the road to immortality?

Definitely a cool subject. If you’re interested in it, you might like Transmetropolitan. In that series it’s a pretty common thing (although they’re called “transients” in the series). I think the big question is—if you could change your species, would you?
