What can we learn from the little top 5 lists that show up when you login to Facebook? My local network thing is West Palm Beach, FL so my stats reflect the userbase in my area.
So we have a couple of interesting topics to examine…
### Theatrical Arts ###
Perhaps not quite as accurate a barometer as the top books below, but still, knowing what movies live in the DVD players of my local comrades could lead to extrapolating more demographic information.
1. Wedding Crashers
2. The Notebook
3. Old School
4. Fight Club
5. Anchorman
So we have Wedding Crashers at #1 here. Absolutely a decent movie in all respects, but worthy of a position as the absolute top best movie ever? It’s not hard to imagine then, that Old School and Anchorman also grace the list.
### Musical Influences ###
Ah yes, the musical arts. What better way to grasp the collective feeling of my area. Let’s get right to it.
1. Rap
2. R&B
3. Sublime
4. Country
5. Rock
Clearly we see Rap at the top of the list as no surprise to anyone. After all, kids of every demographic now appreciate it. Additionally, R&B receives a lot of bleed over from the Rap classification so no surprises there either.
Now, what about “Sublime?” Is that a genre? As far as I can tell, this is apparently referring to the Long Beach, Californian band of the same name and not some obscure class of eccentric downtempo music. Did a vast majority of users actually put “Sublime” in a text field otherwise dominated by genres of music?
Imagine if that kind of data was mined from MySpace accounts — with the wall of shit text people put in those fields. Oh dear.
### Literature ###
Finally, we come to the top 5 books. Ah yes, we could have predicted it would come down to a battle between the young warlock apprentice and the all mighty bearded guy.
1. The Bible
2. Harry Potter
3. Angels and Demons
4. The Notebook
5. The Great Gatsby
As we see, the 4th ranked book is also the 2nd ranked movie. Of more interest is the good book at the top.
### We’ve Learned Nothing ###
Sure, we’ve learned nothing… but really? After listening to Ja-rule on the soundtrack for Wedding Crashers while smoking out with Sublime we’re going to read… The Bible?
I know this was mostly pointless and can’t possibly represent any significant statistics for my area, but I’d be really interested in seeing the top lists for other people’s networks on Facebook. So if you have them, let’s see how they compare to the jokers here in Florida.
