UCLA professor Philip E. Agre has a really good article on how to become a leader in your chosen field; it runs a little long but here are the main take-aways:

Pick an issue.
Start a project to study it.
Find relevant people and talk to them.
Pull together what you’ve heard.
Circulate the result.
Build on your work.
